Abstract
This study focuses on pre-colonial Igbo society and its political, social, and cultural practices. Politically, the region was categorized as “stateless” by British colonial administrators due to the absence of any form of centralized political authority vis-a-vis the situation in Hausaland and Yorubaland. The political system of the Igbo however, had a more complex governance structure where power was diffused in several institutions rather than being concentrated in one individual or group. The social fabric of pre-colonial Igboland emphasized kinship networks, while the economy was based on agriculture, craft specialization, and trade. Their religious cosmology indicates a shared but regionally diverse identity, while interactions with their neighbours were characterized by periods of conflicts and periods of cooperation. The study adopted the historicaldescriptive content analysis research methodology in order to present a nuanced understanding of pre-colonial igboland’s political complexity and to contribute to the broader debates on statelessness, decentralized governance, and indigenous Igbo and African political theory. It concludes that there were perceptible diversities and variations in the cultural practices and political orientations of the different parts of pre-colonial Igboland. These differences notwithstanding, the Igbo shared a common cultural outlook and worldview which was centred around a common language, a common political system, as well as religious and cosmological beliefs. In other words, Igbo society before 1800 was neither anarchic nor uniform. Instead, there was a dynamic plurality of political and cultural forms which adapted across the region
