The MJC ECHERUO faculty of Humanities, Abia State University Uturu evolved (from the University's initial establishment as Imo State University in 1981) under the name, School of Humanities, in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. The School of Humanities then had the following programmes: English Language and Literature, History, Linguistics/Igbo. ( French was not in Humanities then. It was in what was created as Language Centre). When the University was relocated to its present location, the "Divisions" were renamed " Colleges" we had College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which was later named after Professor Michael Joseph Chukwudaalu Echeruo, the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the University and a Professor of English which belongs to the College. In 2001, the University changed from College and Schools system to Faculty and Departmental system. The College in which Humanities belonged, became known as MJC Echeruo Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Language Centre was set aside, and French became a programme in Humanities in a department named: Foreign Language and Translation Studies ( FLATS). Within this period, two new departments were introduced, namely Mass Communication and Religious Studies /Philosophy. These resulted in six departments of Humanities in this Faculty, namely: English Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Translation Studies, History and International Relations, Linguistics and Communication Studies/ Igbo, Mass Communication, and Religious Studies and Philosophy. In 2016, Humanities and Social Sciences became separate Faculties, giving birth to MJC Echeruo Faculty of Humanities with the six departments currently.
