Preserving Igbo Culture Through Digital Media: A Review

Abstract
This review examines the role of digital media technologies in preserving and promoting Igbo culture, language, and heritage in the contemporary digital age. Through a systematic analysis of current literature and digital initiatives, this paper explores how digital platforms, applications, and technologies serve as vehicles for cultural preservation while simultaneously presenting new challenges and opportunities. The review synthesizes findings from 12 studies published between 2018-2024, highlighting innovative approaches to digital cultural preservation, community-led initiatives, and the intersection of technology with indigenous knowledge systems. Key findings indicate that digital media offers unprecedented opportunities for Igbo cultural preservation through language learning applications, digital archives, social media platforms, and virtual reality experiences, while also raising concerns about authenticity, access, and cultural commodification. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research directions and sustainable digital preservation strategies that prioritize community ownership and cultural integrity.
