TACTILE DEMOGRAPHICS IN NURUDDIN FARAH’S CROSSBONES

Abstract
This study explored the intersection of violence and identity in territorial conflicts using Nuruddin Farah’s Crossbones as reference. Through the concepts of tactile demographics, Necropolitanism and Panopticon, the study reveals the way in which bodies are marked, controlled and politicized in a carceral state. An analysis of the novel shows how individuals and communities are mapped during war, piracy, and insurgency. The surveillance, displacement, and bodily vulnerability which the novel exposes reveals how powerful/dictators, necropowers, manipulate movement, touch and space to enforce political and social division. Farah through these pictures emphasizes the consequences of wars, some of which include individual bodies becoming the sites of torture, violence and resistance.
