Abstract
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to shape various facets of creative industries globally, its integration into theatre production raises important questions about authorship, aesthetics, and the future of performance. This study explores the experiences of Nigerian stage directors in incorporating AI tools into the creative process of theatre production. Using a qualitative research approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with selected directors actively engaged in contemporary stage practice across Nigeria. The study investigates the nature of AI tools utilized, ranging from script generation and lighting design software to digital stage management systems, and examines directors' perceptions of their impact on storytelling, rehearsal efficiency, and cultural expression. Findings reveal a mix of curiosity, cautious optimism, and ethical concern among directors. While many acknowledge AI’s potential to enhance production value and streamline creative tasks, others express reservations about the loss of human nuance and the erosion of indigenous performance traditions. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on AI in the humanities by offering culturally grounded insights into how theatre professionals in a postcolonial African context negotiate innovation and tradition. This research underscores the need for a contextualized framework for AI adoption in Nigerian theatre that preserves artistic integrity while embracing technological advancement.
