Abstract
The study investigated traditional institution-based and mysterious phenomena-based verbal taboos, as well as their alternatives in Igbo. It adopted the qualitative orientation which involved semi-structured interviews with a total of 20 participants drawn from four purposefully chosen communities. The study identified prohibitions associated with traditional institutions such as Okonko, Ekpe, and euphemisms used as alternatives to verbal taboos associated with the traditional institutions. In addition, the study analyzed some verbal taboos associated with mysterious phenomena including death, snake, shrines, and other entities of cultural significance, and their alternatives, such as euphemism, proverbs and idioms. It was concluded that traditional institutions and mysterious phenomena represent aspects of verbal taboos, and they differ in many cultures and represent critical aspects of the philosophy, thought and belief of the people.
